A dozen kilometres from Menton, yet another world: pebble-paved lanes, chapels and a 360° view from Cap Martin to the Italian Riviera from the castle ruins. Beneath visitors' feet, more than 55 metres of rock hide a Maginot Line fort built between 1932 and 1938 — 2,000 square metres of underground galleries fitted out like a submarine, which most tourists on the coast have no idea exists.
