Coaraze, the village of sundials
The "village of the sun", officially labelled by Météo France, whose façades carry eleven sundials signed by Cocteau, Ben and Sosno.
Facing due south and shielded from northerly winds by the Alpine ridges, Coaraze racks up record sunshine hours, which earned it the official "Village du Soleil" label. In 1960, the mayor of the time asked renowned artists to create sundials on the village façades — Jean Cocteau painted "Les Lézards" there with the ceramicist Gilbert Valentin. The project, abandoned and then revived in 2008, now counts eleven sundials signed by Cocteau, Ben, Sosno and Ponce de León, an open-air collection most visitors to the coast would never expect to find in a village of 800 people.
