Saorge
An amphitheatre village built into the mountainside in the Roya gorges, overlooked by a 17th-century baroque Franciscan monastery.
Tucked away an hour and a half from the coast, on the edge of the Mercantour, Saorge occupies the hollow of a steep slope like the tiers of an amphitheatre — one of the most spectacular villages in the Nice hinterland, ranked among the most beautiful in France yet spared the coast's tourist flows. The Franciscan monastery, founded in 1633, watches over a village of stone-slab roofs that the Église Saint-Sauveur and its Lombard bell tower have overlooked since the 15th century.
