The Old Town of Sospel
A medieval episcopal city on the salt route between Nice and Turin, crossed by one of the last fortified bridges still standing in Europe.
A mandatory stop on the old mule track of the salt route linking Nice to Turin, Sospel once levied a toll on its 13th-century bridge — today home to the tourist office, one of the last fortified bridges left in Europe. An episcopal city from the 5th century, it has kept its ochre and brown trompe-l'œil façades along the Bévéra, its Gothic houses and its still-working wash house — without ever making it onto the classic Riviera itineraries, which generally stop at the edge of the Mercantour.
